Report: Kurtis Foster to Sign with Flyers
- Updated: January 12, 2013
According to a report from Flyers insider Tim Panaccio, unrestricted free agent Kurtis Foster will be added to the Flyers’ blue line once the lockout is officially over.
Foster, 31, is a big body to add to the defensive unit at 6-5, 226lbs. He is a nine year veteran of the NHL, in which he has played for six teams, most recently the Minnesota Wild.
During the lockout, the soon-to-be Flyer was able to stay on the ice as he signed with Tappara of the Finish SM-liiga. In his thirteen games played overseas, he scored three goals and had three helpers.
For the Flyers fans who are not familiar with Kurtis Foster, he is described as an offensive defenseman who has an extremely powerful shot from the point. However, he does not take complete advantage of his big frame, having only 195 hits throughout his entire NHL career. To make a comparison, Luke Schenn had 270 hits last season.
This signing is an immediate upgrade for the Flyers. With Andrej Meszaros, Marc-Andre Bourdon, and Erik Gustafsson all experiencing injuries, there are holes in the Flyers’ defense. Filling holes with a veteran such as Foster will be more beneficial than handing Gervais and Lilja full-time roles. F0r the beginning of the season, you will most likely see Foster as the sixth defenseman.
